Nelson, originally known as Eldorado, was first named by Spaniards in 1775 after they discovered gold in Eldorado Canyon. A century later, the area became notorious for the Techatticup Mine, where violent disputes over ownership and labor resulted in routine killings. Despite its dark history, the mine produced millions of dollars in gold, silver, copper, and lead before flash flooding made the area uninhabitable.
