Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Arrival to Moroni

Please note this package does not include international flight in and out of Moroni. Advance notice of 10 days is required in order to confirm this tour.

Day 1: Arrival in Moroni (Grande Comore)

Arrival in Moroni, capital of the Comoros Islands and transfer to our hotel. If time permits, we can go on a city tour to explore the famous quiet Medina with its beautiful narrow streets and its old spice market. Overnight at Retaj Moroni Hotel (please note that the Retaj Moroni Hotel does not serve alcohol)

The sleepy capital Moroni is a delightful little town perched on the edge of the Indian Ocean and often surrounded by fishing boats in its harbor. The old quarter of the town is a maze of narrow streets that are fantastic to explore, and many buildings still have the traditional carved doors. Moroni's main feature is its ancient Friday Mosque, while its market is a great place to wander around to observe scenes of daily life. Once an important trading town on the Indian Ocean, Moroni has slipped quietly into a forgotten existence where tourists are rare and visitors are treated as a curious novelty. The views out to sea as the sunsets, over tiny ships heading out for an evening's fishing, are unforgettable.

  2. Day 2: Moroni to Anjouan

Morning transfer to the airport for the short flight to Anjouan. On arrival you will be met and taken on a guided tour of Mutsamudu, the capital of the island, to discover the gorgeous Medina and climb up to the historical citadel which offers a breathtaking view over the town and port. Anjouan is widely accepted as the most beautiful of the three islands which makes up the Union of the Comoros.

Anjouan seems to sit uncomfortably within the Comoros nation. In 1997 it declared itself an independent nation, and then asked to be re-integrated into France, but following French refusal re-joined the Comoros United Nations 2002. It now has semi-autonomous status. Anjouan is a pretty little island which is the world's principal exporter of ylang-ylang oil, an ingredient found in most perfumes. The island is heavily forested with beautiful beaches and small villages dotted here and there, and like Grande Comore its center culminates in the peak the 1600m Mt. N'Tingui.

  3. Day 3: Full day exploration of Anjouan

After breakfast, we depart for a full day tour of Anjouan. Drive through the col de Patsy which offers spectacular views of the island and continue to the ylang-ylang distillery of Bambao. After a short stop we proceed to the Tatringa falls where you can observe the former building once used by the French manufactures to distillate the flowers used to prepare the world-renowned perfume Chanel No 5. Next is town of Domoni to discover the historical mausoleum of former President Abdallah and stop for lunch. In the afternoon we drive through the farmer lands of Nyumakele before returning to the hotel. Overnight at Al Amal Hotel

  4. Day 4: Anjouan

After breakfast drive to Drindi village where you start a 2 hours trekking in the National Park of Mt. Tringui to the hidden and mysterious Lake Dzialandze. Enjoy spectacular panoramic views and observe the many birds which populate the lake and surroundings. We then return to the hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure either to relax by the pool or do further visits and hikes. Overnight at Al Amal Hotel

  5. Day 5: From Anjouan to Moheli

Morning transfer to the airport for the flight to Moheli. Depending on the airlines' schedule a connection may be required in Moroni. On arrival you will be met and transferred to Laka Lodge, a small and intimate resort with its own beach. There are number of optional excursions available including trips to some of the smaller islands nearby, and evening visits to watch turtle lay their eggs i the sand.

Moheli is the smallest of the four islands of the Comoros archipelago, and is the wildest and least populated island of the Union, but also the most scenic and well-preserved. Nature lovers will like it here - its flora is rich and includes different species of orchids and endemic palms, while animal life includes turtles, the Livingstone fruit bat, whales, dolphins and dugongs. Overnight at Laka Lodge

  6. Day 6: Moheli

Day 6 and 7 at leisure to enjoy this beautiful little island. Moheli is very easy to explore independently or optional excursions can be arranged directly with the lodge.

  7. Day 7: Moheli

Leisure day to enjoy Moheli. Optional excursions can be arranged directly with the lodge. You can arrange a guided hike across the island on tracks of virgin rainforest. You can also cycle around the island by renting bike from the lodge.

  8. Day 8: From Moheli to Moroni

After breakfast, transfer to the local airport for your flight back to Moroni. On arrival, transfer to your hotel in order to freshen up and drop your luggage or continue with the tour. Guided tour of the northern part of Grande Comore. Drive across the island from the foothills of the Mount Karthala, and impressive active volcano, to the high plateau of Diboini to view other extinct craters. Proceed to the agricultural cooperative in Mbeni where you can see another ylang-ylang distillery and a vanilla pods warehouse. In the afternoon drive to the famous rock formation shaped as a Dragon and stop by the enchanting Salt Lake, which water color may vary from white to blue turquoise. On the way back to Moroni the last stop at the beautiful white sand beaches of Galawa and Chomoni where you can enjoy a swim in the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean if you wish to.

Grande Comore officially known as Ngazidja. Grande Comore is the largest of the Comoros Islands but has no rivers or waterways at all - all water is gathered via wells or as rainwater. Prior to the arrival of French, it was divided up into several sultanates. Grande Comore is dominated by Mt. Karthala, which is 2361m in the largest active volcano in the world. The island has around 315,000 inhabitants, most of whom are of Arab or African descent.

  9. Day 9: Grande Comore

After breakfast, enjoy a full day tour of the southern part of Grande Comore. Drive to famous fishing village of Iconi and visit the ruins of the Sultan Palace built in the 18th century. En route stop at the historical adjacent cliffs where 300 local ladies commit suicide in the time of slavery. Visit the lovely and peaceful Lake Marabou where many birds nest before continue to the artisanal ylang-ylang and spices plantation in the small village of Kafouni. Return to Moroni for a visit of the national museum as well as the main daily market where you can find all local products to buy.
