Pompeii
Ancient city at the foot of Vesuvius very flourishing in the Roman period. Its destruction occurred in 79 AD. following the famous eruption of the volcano that covered it with lapilli and ashes. The first archaeological explorations took place towards the middle of the 18th century, the excavations took a great impulse, but only from 1860 did they become systematic and rational.
