Je komt aan in een ommuurde stad die in 1680 de Portugese kroon, met militaire en burgerlijke gezanten, hierheen bracht om de Spaanse schepen in de gaten te houden die op weg waren naar Buenos Aires, op zoek naar goud, zilver en edelstenen. Je ontdekt de wankele constructies uit die tijd, hun handgemaakte daken, hun lantaarns en stenen straten met natuurlijke afwatering, in een stad die in de tijd lijkt te hebben stilgestaan en op magische wijze bewaard is gebleven met zijn militaire veldpoort, zijn ophaalbrug en zijn kanonneerboten.
