Next, the tour proceeds to the base of the cliff where the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut is located. This temple is a magnificent monument and a testament to the greatness of one of Egypt's most prominent female rulers. After continuous restoration and excavation efforts since 1891, the temple has become one of the finest examples of ancient Egyptian architecture. In the days of Hatshepsut's reign (1473-1458 BC), the temple was even more impressive. It was approached by a grand causeway lined with sphinxes, surrounded by gardens filled with exotic trees and plants, and connected to the Temple of Karnak on the east bank of the Nile. The temple, known as Djeser-djeseru or the "Most Holy of Holies," was designed by Hatshepsut's courtier and possible lover, Senenmut. Though it features a rising central axis and a three-part plan like most memorial temples.
